The Health Benefits of Hempseed Oil: Oil Pulling

Just as with any other type of oil, oil pulling with hempseed oil is effective in cleansing toxins from the body, but it can occasionally cause some immediate short-term symptoms such as body aches, fatigue, weakness, tooth and gum pain, digestive irregularity, and other flu-like symptoms. Before cannabis became widely known as a medicine, hemp seeds were used throughout ancient cultures as, among other things, a food source. Hemp seeds are considered by many today as a super food, rich in protein, fiber, and essential fatty acids, a boast not well made by many of hemp’s commercially dominant cousins like corn and soy . Until just decades ago when the world saw its first anti-drug policies, hempseed oil was widely reported to have many wondrous health properties. For many years, people from all demographics brought booming business to physicians, herbalists, and apothecaries all around the modern world as men, women, and their children bought and used hempseed oil for just about anything under the sun it seemed: male balding, joint pain, multiple skin problems, even improved eye health. While a number of these reports are perhaps the results of some type of placebo effect, several of these effects are indeed not. Now many of these claims can be proven with well-documented clinical reports, and many researchers continue to carefully study the numerous effects that hempseed oil can have on human health. One such benefit, oil pulling, is the practice of swishing oil back and forth throughout the mouth to rid the body of toxins. To start, place a spoonful of oil into your mouth and swish it around from side to side, front to back, even between the teeth. The chewing action of this swishing movement activates enzymes that help to break down microbes that are collected in the oil as it passes across the teeth, gums, and lining of the mouth. The oil will eventually whiten and change texture as it absorbs toxins from the mouth, eyes, respiratory tract, and many other parts of the body. Take note that at this point, the oil is full of microbes and other toxins and should be swallowed under no circumstances. After 15 or 20 minutes, spit out and throw away the oil, and make sure to rinse your mouth well to clear any remaining toxins. One good way to further benefit from this practice is to brush your teeth with a mixture of just a bit of oil with an even mixture of mineral salt and baking soda. After brushing, rinse thoroughly with warm water. This helps to neutralize anything that may remain after rinsing, and it gives your mouth a fresh, clean feeling. With repeated use, teeth become noticeably whiter as they begin to anchor themselves more firmly to gums that are now much pinker and healthier-looking than before. Some people have even reported signs that strongly hint towards the possibility of the re-mineralization of previously damaged teeth. If you decide to try it out, aim to do it for about 15 to 20 minutes at a time, two or three times a day. Typically, the first signs of improved health through oil pulling occur will occur in the first few days as you begin to notice healthier teeth and gums and improved breathing. As toxins are expelled from deeper within the body, symptoms of other ailments like arthritis and psoriasis eventually diminish, and in time, a regular swishing of hempseed oil will benefit the entire body as toxins that would normally collect in the body are regularly cleared, giving your body the chance it deserves to be healthy and strong. Hempseed oil isn’t the only oil that this works well with however; olive, sunflower, and coconut oils are also popular with many oil pullers, and like many other plant oils, they each offer EFA’s that are not found in the others. You should also occasionally pull with different types of oil to maintain the best possible balance of EFA's in your body. Some oils aren’t very suitable for pulling like canola or corn oil, but since they taste fairly foul to begin with, they probably wouldn’t be a very popular choice anyway.
