THC and CBD- Marijuana Potency and Medical Applications

When you look at potency of marijuana, most people look only at the THC levels. Here, we venture to take a look at other factors that affect marijuana potency, including THC and CBD.
  • THC: We have become more and more familiar with what THC is and how it plays a role in the cannabis that we buy. THC, or Tetrahydrocannabinol, resides in a class called cannabinoids and is the chief ingredient in cannabis and is responsible for getting you “high”. Different types of cannabis strains range in THC levels from 3% (chiefly marijuana that comes over the Mexican border), to marijuana that has achieved upwards of 33% (Tutankhamon, an AK-47 variation)
  • CBD: Unlike THC, CBD, or cannabidiol, is another type of cannabinoid found in cannabis that does NOT have any type of psychoactive properties. As a result, it does not give you the feeling of being “high”, rather it has been known to give feeling of more profound alertness. CBD has anti- cancer properties and helps with patients who may have convulsion, muscle spasms, and patients who suffer from Multiple Sclerosis just to name a few. Furthermore, the presence of CBD does not allow the liver to break down THC as quickly, allowing the use to maintain his/her “high” for a longer period of time.
  • THC and CBD Working in Concert: You cannot have one without the other. THC helps with a number of health ailments that CBD does not and vice versa. Researchers in San Francisco are continuing to work on proper ratios for THC and CBD levels, that if injected, can completely eliminate brain and breast tumors, within thirty days!
There is still a great deal of research to be done with cannabis research, but more and more exciting advancements are made every day. Variations in THC and CBD levels look like they could continuously gain medical merit by eliminating cancerous tumors and help ailing patients of all different diseases.
