Since 2007 New Mexico implemented a medical marijuana program that allows patients easy and safe access to their medicine. In 2010 the state amended these laws and actually increased the amount of cannabis a state sanctioned production facility can grow from 95 mature plants to 150. A Patient must obtain a written recommendation from his or her physician of which he or she would then obtain a state licensed marijuana card. With this card the patient is protected from any criminal proceedings if caught with cannabis. In addition a patient can have up to 6 ounces of usable cannabis and up to 16 plants with 4 being mature at a time. There are several pre-qualifying diseases including;- Arthritis
- Severe chronic pain
- Painful peripheral neuropathy
- Intractable nausea/vomiting
- Severe anorexia/cachexia
- Hepatitis C infection currently receiving antiviral treatment
- Crohn's disease
- Post-traumatic Stress Disorder
- Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's disease)
- Cancer
- Glaucoma
- Multiple sclerosis
- Damage to the nervous tissue of the spinal cord with intractable spasticity
- Epilepsy
- HIV/AIDS
- Hospice patients
